People aged 65 or older make up 15.7 percent of the population in Korea. There is an increasing demand for technology and innovations to support healthy and active aging. In 2017, a Presidential Committee on 4th Industrial Revolution was created, and ‘i-KOREA 4.0 Plan’ for human-centered innovations and growth was announced. ‘i-KOREA 4.0 Plan’ includes smart welfare projects which aim to develop and utilize ICT and AI-based devices and systems for the care of older people, and also to support their independence, safety, social connectedness and aging in place.
Over the past decades, projects such as ALL, REACH, AGE-WELL, Platinum Society Plan, MIT AgeLAB and others have been developed around the world to meet the challenges of global aging. Most of these projects have tried to build models that could link research and practice. But everywhere there is a struggle to bring gerontechnology to all who need them to promote the active and healthy aging as well as to enhance the quality of life and dignity of life.
The development of artificial intelligence, IoT, robotics, and big data science will provide a more efficient and effective living environment and services that could enhance. quality of life of the aging population. In the era of artificial intelligence, smart homes and smart community projects around the world use their applications. However, under the realities of the digital divide and polarization of resources, less attention has been paid to the acceptance, usability, and accessibility of the individuals who are the end-users of the remarkable accomplishments of science and technology in the 21st century.
In this context, it is time to set the agenda for “Gerontechnology for All” to bridge the gap among different sectors. The 13th ISG World Conference in 2022 in Daegu will be the stage for bringing researchers, business enterprises, policy stakeholders and individuals to share the latest developments and future vision of gerontechnology.
